ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

A wide range of ministry specializations are needed in the contemporary

church. AGS has responded to this by creating a diversity of ministry tracks:

Applied Linguistics

Christian Counseling

Community Development

Missions

Youth Ministry

Master of Divinity - Academic and Reasearch Ministries

The AGS Curriculum aims to integrate the following aspects and themes into all programs, courses and activities.

Rooted in the Word
The Bible plays a central role in all the courses in various ways. Theories, principles, and methods are related to, compared to, analyzed, and evaluated in light of biblical principles and theology. Biblical principles and theology should inform all content and learning activities.

Ministry to the World
  Mission
The church is a missionary church and a missional dimension and intention should be present in the whole curriculum.
  Holistic Ministry
Participating in God’s mission and illustrating his love to the world involves holistic ministry that cares for the whole person and society, and enables the transformation of individual persons, cultures and societies, making true disciples of all nations.

Spirituality
All courses and learning activities should contribute to and enable spiritual growth towards Christ-likeness.

Reflective Practice
The whole curriculum aims to integrate and balance theory and practice, or, knowledge, ministry skills, and spirituality. It should enable the learning cycle of creative and critical reflection upon practice and experience, and then action flowing forth from that reflection, leading again to reflection upon the action taken.

CORE REQUIRED CURRICULUM

All programs share a similar core curriculum that is required for the M.A. and M.Div. programs. The following are the minimum requirements for all programs. Please take note that in some programs there are additional requirements in some of these subject areas.

Research Seminar
All students must attend the Research Seminar which consists of 30 class hours (3 hours weekly for 10 weeks). This is a non-credit requirement.

  Growth Groups
All students, except some diploma students, must participate in four semesters of Growth Groups. These groups focus on spiritual and personal development, and meet for 1 hour weekly for 10 weeks every semester. This is a non-credit requirement.

  Biblical Studies
In both the M.A. and M.Div. degrees a minimum of 12 units in Biblical Studies is required. These core-required courses consist of the following: Pentateuch, Prophets, Studying the Synoptic Gospels, Studying the Pauline Literature and/or Bible Electives.
Some programs require additional units in Biblical Studies. Please consult the program curriculum and the Program Director.

  Biblical Languages

Some M.A. programs do not require Biblical Languages, others do. Please consult the program curriculum and the Program Director. All M.Div. programs require at least 12 units in Biblical Languages. Students will usually select one of the two languages, either Greek or Hebrew, and complete 12 units in one language to enable competency in that language. Depending on the training needs and the situation of the student, a student may take units in both languages, but this can be done only after consultation with and the approval of the Program Director. The required courses for Biblical Languages are:

Hebrew 1
OR
Greek 1
Hebrew 2
Greek 2
Hebrew 3
Greek 3
Hebrew Exegesis
Greek Exegesis

  Theological Studies
In both the M.A. and M.Div. degrees a minimum of 9 units in Theological Studies are required. These core required courses could consist of the following according to the specific requirements of the program: Theology 1, 2, 3, Doing Theology in Asia, Theology in Practice, and/or Theology Electives.
Some programs require additional units in Theological Studies. Please consult the program curriculum and the Program Director.

  Christian History
In both the M.A. and M.Div. degrees a minimum of 6 units in Christian History are required, except for the M.A. programs in Christian Counseling, Marriage and Family Ministry, and Youth Ministry with no requirements, and Educational Ministries with 3 units required. These core-required courses could consist of the following according to the specific requirements of the program: Church History 1, 2, Asian Church History, and/or Philippine Church History.
Some programs require additional units in Christian History. Please consult the program curriculum and the Program Director.

  Leadership and Spiritual Formation
All students in all programs must take the following two courses:
Personal and Spiritual Formation (3 units)
Being a Servant Leader (3 units)

LEARNING IN FIELD EXPERIENCE (LIFE)

LIFE is the field education program at AGS. The goals of the LIFE Program are:

  • To integrate theological reflection, spirituality, and ministry.
  • To develop the ability to critically reflect and evaluate ministry situations and experience.
  • To nurture a greater sense of self-awareness in the context of ministry in terms of:
    • Identity
    • Integrity
    • Intimacy
    • Industry
  • To develop the professional ministry skills of students.
  • To provide supervised experience to put classroom learning into practical use.
  • To create supportive learning environment among peers and faculty member.
  • To develop network relationships outside AGS for meaningful ministry experience.

We consider LIFE as an essential element of the training program and learning experience at AGS. Students therefore earn academic credits upon successful completion of their LIFE Programs. The number of units varies from program to program because of the different nature, training needs, and requirements of each program.
Since the LIFE requirements differ from program to program the students should consult with the respective program directors regarding these. Programs publish their own pamphlets, brochures and syllabi for LIFE, and these are available upon request from the program directors.

AGS is accredited by Asia Theological Association and the Association of Theological Schools in South East Asia, and is a partner institution of Asia Graduate School of Theology. It is recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of the Philippine government.
